What is a “Carbon Footprint”?

A carbon footprint is the total GREENhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an individual, an event, organization, service, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. Greenhouse gases, including the carbon-containing gases carbon dioxide and methane, can be emitted through fossil fuel burning in energy production, land clearance, and the production and consumption of food, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, transportation, and other services.

The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the world's highest rates. Globally, the average is closer to 4 tons. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop under 2 tons by 2050. The global average annual carbon footprint per person in 2014 was about 5 tonnes Co2. 

Ways to reduce personal carbon footprint

Lowering individual carbon footprints from 16 tons to 2 tons won’t happen overnight. Still, by making small changes to our actions like eating less meat, taking fewer connecting flights, drying our clothes in the sun instead of using an electric dryer, using a bicycle or public transport instead of driving, and even adding air pressure to the wheels of motor vehicles, we can save energy and start making a big difference.

Carbon Footprint Offsetting

A carbon offset reduces emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. Offsets are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). One tonne of carbon offset represents the reduction of one tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.
