29th edition of the Climate Summit begins in Baku, Azerbaijan

The year 2024 is on track to etch itself into history not for groundbreaking innovations or monumental achievements, but for a chilling record no one wanted to claim: it is set to be the year with the highest carbon emissions ever recorded with a projection of 41.600 millions of tons of carbon emissions.  As we continue to burn through fossil fuels and deforest vital ecosystems, the planet’s atmosphere is absorbing an unprecedented surge of carbon, this has a lot of impact on the climate crisis with each passing day. If this is the wake-up call, it's already ringing far too loudly. The question is no longer how much longer can we afford this, but rather how much longer will we have the chance to turn it around?

Understanding COP29: A Crucial Moment in the Fight Against Climate Change

The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is set to take center stage as one of the most pivotal climate summits of our time. Held annually, COP conferences bring together countries from across the globe to address the ever-growing challenge of climate change. This year’s COP29, taking place from November 11 to 22, 2024, will once again bring world leaders, scientists, activists, and industry stakeholders together in a bid to find solutions to the urgent environmental crises we face.

What is COP29?

COP29 is not just another conference—it's a critical platform for countries to negotiate and implement strategies to curb global warming. The summit provides governments the chance to evaluate their progress, set new targets, and agree on policies that can mitigate the disastrous effects of climate change. A central aim is to fulfill the promises of the Paris Agreement, which strives to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. This year’s meeting will once again focus on how nations can collectively accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate impacts, and boost international collaboration.

Key Issues at COP29

As we look ahead to COP29, the global community faces a growing urgency to tackle climate change head-on. In 2024, natural disasters—such as wildfires, devastating floods, and intense hurricanes—have wreaked havoc across the world, underscoring the severe and escalating impacts of climate change. At COP29, a major focus will be on securing funding to address these crises and help nations, especially the most vulnerable, cope with the growing impacts.

Another key issue on the table at COP29 is the carbon market. This year, delegates will continue discussions around the controversial concept of carbon trading. The debate centers on whether countries with carbon-absorbing projects—like reforestation or carbon capture technologies—should be allowed to sell carbon credits to other nations to offset their emissions. Determining the rules for these carbon credit systems, including which projects qualify and how the system will be managed, will be crucial to ensuring that such initiatives deliver real environmental benefits.

The conversation will also shift toward boosting investment in renewable energy—especially in developing countries. A special focus will be on expanding access to technologies like solar, wind, green hydrogen, and even nuclear energy. The goal is clear: to significantly reduce global carbon emissions, aiming for a 30% reduction by 2030, in line with the global ambition set out in the Paris Agreement.

The Path to Net Zero: The 2050 Target

COP29 will also serve as a critical checkpoint on the road to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To meet this goal, countries need to halve emissions over the next five years—an incredibly challenging target that will require concerted, global action. With only a narrow window to act, the discussions at COP29 will be vital to determining whether or not the 1.5°C global warming target remains within reach.
