In search of a healthier planet: Net Zero

Reducing net emissions to zero and addressing climate change is a possibility by planning for the future, for the long term, and not focusing on short-term goals. It means putting together and informing a comprehensive set of policies that bring about changes in investments and behaviors, and requires facilitating the transition for those most affected. Solutions exist and are within reach if governments take action today.

If governments plan for the future rather than planning for short-term goals, they can make proactive choices that lay the groundwork for development and avoid decisions that may entrench harmful growth patterns and investments that could become obsolete in a lower-carbon world.

Designing cities to be transit-friendly, for example, is a fundamental part of planning for the future. It is also critical throughout the world to invest in the research and technology that will be needed for long-term development.

More information on smart cities can be found in the following article.

Net emissions can be reduced to zero as part of sound, well-planned economic growth that is focused on four aspects:

-Ending reliance on fossil fuels to produce electric light and starting to use clean energy sources that reduce carbon emissions in the electricity generation process.

-With the resulting increase in clean energy, a massive shift to electricity use can then increase access to clean energy and displace polluting fuels.

-Increased energy efficiency helps reduce demand.

-Maintaining natural carbon sinks in good condition through good forest and land management helps offset emissions by absorbing and storing carbon.

Many of the measures that governments can take now, such as developing public transport and improving energy efficiency. Also, offer immediate and local benefits in terms of access and pollution reduction.

Holistic climate ambition is only the beginning. It is critical to translate sustainability goals into a realistic action plan.  Management must communicate the mission, vision and strategies clearly and ensure that sustainability practices are implemented in day-to-day operations.

Increase transparency through data-driven communication.

Most companies already report to comply with regulations. However, in today's business environment, many companies go beyond regulatory compliance and publicly report on the progress of their sustainability initiatives. This creates added value for their consumers.

Many companies have committed to achieving the ambitious goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Translating this ambition into practice requires clarity of vision and strategy to establish a baseline, set meaningful emissions reduction targets and report progress to investors and the public.

Why would countries in the region invest in renewable energy today? Early movers and companies that identify and occupy niche markets ahead of the competition have a long-term advantage and are in a better position to take advantage of market developments. Early initiatives in this sector will communicate to the market the development of the necessary systems, components, value chains, institutional and engineering capabilities, thus preparing systems for economic production and ensuring value-added benefits in other sectors.
